Ways to Overcome Cravings.

It never fails…you sit down at night to watch T.V.  The kitchen is closed for the night.  Closed.  But you start to watch your favorite show, and you get distracted.  You think you need food.  Here are some helpful tips to help you determine if food is really what you want.

Ways to Overcome Cravings

  1. Remember your goals.  Write them down and put them on the fridge.  If you happen to go there, you can see your goals.  Your brain will shift and remember your long-term goals and hopefully ignore the cravings you have.
  2. Drink a glass of water.  A lot of people don’t realize that drinking a glass of water can be a great tool for making you feel full.  Proper water intake actually helps you metabolize food and without the presence of water, your body might not be able to get the nutrients it needs.  Many food cravings are based on your body’s need for specific nutrients.
  3. Get moving.   If your craving triggers you to get up, why not pair it with something you want to get done.  If you think you need a snack, tell yourself you can only have one after walking around the block.  Or lifting the kettle bell for 10 reps on each side.  You get the drift.  It will help you form new habits instead of eating mindlessly just because it’s there.
  4. Take a hot shower and relax.  Give yourself a sauna type shower so that it opens your pores.  When you get out, you will most likely have forgotten your craving.  Have a large glass of water by your bed or some hot tea and relax and get ready for the day ahead.  If you are not in the area where food it…and your mind is then on bedtime routines, it really does help.
  5. Out of sight.  This one sounds easy, but if you live with someone who is constantly getting up to fix snacks late at night and making all kinds of noise in the cabinet, you are actually going to want some of whatever they are having.  I asked my husband long ago to help me stick to a plan.  It was hard at first, but it gradually became easier.  I also make sure that only veggies and fruits are there for me to reach.

Last but not least for me, I drink greens in my water to help me fight against sugar cravings.  There is so much more I could tell you that as I began to heal my sugar cravings, and the “gut”, things began to improve in many areas of my life.  To read more about the program I developed based off my research check out >>> Work with me. <<<

War on me…

The invisible war inside me threatens to take me down.

I suspect that if I were to take the posts about my food issues and put them together in a book, it would be helpful to many people.  I will briefly try to explain what has happened to my body as best I understand it.  When I was born, I was born with the C282y gene that the Irish people needed.  It not being the potato famine and all that, it continues to function in the way it would have by holding onto iron.  Basically, it is thought that this protein functions to regulate iron absorption, and mine is “broken” so to speak. Luckily, the porphyria cutanea tarda kicked in and gave me blisters all over and turned my urine dark.  Warning!  Warning!  Anyway, you can see other posts about all that.  Just use the search button.

So we have a kid loaded up on iron, fed by well water, eating collard greens like they are going out of style and taking her Flintstone vitamins.  Anyone see what’s happening?  Yes, you over there.  Poisoning myself.  That would be correct.  Because my body has no way of getting rid of the access iron.

Now let’s throw in mononucleosis at age 15 which left behind some Epstein-Barr virus and find out that EBV latently persists in the individual’s B cells for the rest of the individual’s life.  Hmmm.  Not sure what happened with this, but I KNOW it was reactivated about 4 years ago which started causing a number of problems and thus spawning more invisible diseases.

Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis was found when my body starting attacking itself several years ago.  To use a bit from the Mayo Clinic:  Hashimoto’s disease is a condition in which your immune system attacks your thyroid, a small gland at the base of your neck below your Adam’s apple. The thyroid gland is part of your endocrine system, which produces hormones that coordinate many of your body’s activities.
Read that part again about coordinating MANY of your body’s activities.  READ it.  MANY.  I exhibited every SINGLE one of the symptoms for all of these diseases, but never in my life had a light-bulb gone off as when my good friend told me to read about Hashimoto’s.  I’m going to let you use the link above if you want to read more about Hashi’s but seriously it was the worst diagnosis.  I just didn’t know it yet.

When I started to feel like I had the flu every single day for the last 3 years, I should have known something more was coming.  The truth is, I did know.  I knew I had fibromyalgia, I knew I was living with pain and the swollen tender points daily, but what I didn’t know was that it was so hard for people to understand and/or believe.  From what I can tell, it is usually triggered by an underlying cause.  Read more about fibromyalgia here.

All this bring me up to date, but what I left out was what I did in between to feel better.  As the years went on, the extreme sensitivity to cold got to me.  My bones ached to their very core.  Still do, but cold is worse.  My stomach bloated like a Macy’s Thanksgiving Day balloon.  I would have to go to the bathroom more than normal people, but still couldn’t lose weight.  It was painful.  I went through all kinds of tests, again that portion is in the blog if you search.  Giving up gluten as BEST I could was not good enough.  I really had to be serious.  Then I suspected there was another trigger,  so I gave up sugar in November.  That was very, very, very difficult.  I felt like Paula Deen came over and took away my Southern License.

I am not teaching.  I actually could not continue.  The pain, fatigue, constant contact with infection had my body fighting hard just to stay alive.  Not to mention the phlebotomies, and the fact that now my blood cells are considered Microcytic Anemia stage.  I was dizzy, it was hard to get my breath, and my exhaustion was at the highest it had been since I could remember.

I will not go down without a fight.

I started a process by researching all-natural supplements and what would help my body.  I got off acid-blockers as my stomach was already having issues with digestion so that did not actually help.  I started taking apple-cider vinegar in water.  I added probiotics, see the tab here called Vitalize You for more on that, and I added vitamin D as well as a gluten-free supplement called It’s Vital.  I still have bad days.  Flare-ups, and days I stay in my pajamas, but the good days are now finally catching up to the bad days and for that I am thankful.  I am working with my all-natural supplements business and I am spreading awareness of “invisible” diseases because they sure as hell aren’t invisible on the inside.  Not at all.

Challenge accepted…

Fibromyalgia Awareness

Every once in a while you might feel like Life has marched right up to you and thrown down the gauntlet.  Poof.  The dust rises and you look her right in the eye, and you say come on bitch.  I got this.  I was having a year like this, but no more.  I made myself do a 90 day challenge on my little known supplement page called Vitalize You.  Of course, my friends all know about it, but I won’t apologize for waking up and realizing what is in the food we eat.  What is in the medicines we take, and what WAS in my vitamins.  I now am on completely all-natural NON GMO products.  It is very important for someone with autoimmune conditions.

May 12th is Fibromyalgia Awareness DAY.  One day?  Are you serious?  No, that won’t cut it.  I am going to try to talk about it more on my FB page for my blog.  So to start off with, I encourage you to read a few articles I found.  The first one was really hard for me to wrap my head around.  I hurt all the time and you are telling me to exercise.  WHY??  Even if I didn’t hurt, I am not likely to actually WANT to exercise.  Sigh.  Read Fibromyalgia Exercise Studies if you want.  I have some lovely friends who try to encourage me out of my hermit-like state.  I appreciate you all.  Because I guess comfy clothes can be worn walking.  So technically I don’t have to change…I can add that to my list.

Next, I was reading about Vitamin D Benefits and Fibromyalgia.  I am really low on Vitamin D since I have that pesky vampire-type thing going on where my skin can actually be harmed by the sun.  Go figure.  I am now on an all-natural readily available Vitamin D supplement.  Lastly, I read about this list where I pretty much had all the symptoms on it.  It was depressing for a second, and then I thought, I have had these symptoms for as long as I can remember, get over it.  Move.  Do something.  A war in my head would be like Darth Vader fighting Luke.  Obviously my symptoms are the dark side…I am not giving in!  Oh, the list is called Fibromyalgia Symptoms.

I hear the whooshing noise of the light sabers…I am screaming.  Noooooo!  What?  I am a geek.  You have whatever you want in your head.  Okay, back to the fight.  Whoosh.  That breathing mask noise is on my nerves Darth.

I leave you with this quote I have used before, and still love:

Motivational Monday…

Here it is, another Monday, but this one doesn’t have to be like all the others.  In fact, this one could be the start of something new.  I am talking about a “new you”.  The idea to create something new is always in my head.  I know that I do more research than ermmm perhaps “normal” people on health topics.  But since I’m not “normal” anyway, who is by the way, and because I have a vision to help others, I decided to start a new business page.

Most people I know are exhausted in their current lives.  They are approaching a certain age, whatever age that is, and they have it in their head that this is it.  They have been through college, perhaps gotten married, maybe not, and are in their career for life.  This is it for them.  You all know I did something drastic last year.  I took a “sabbatical” in the middle of an economic crisis.  In a time when most people would keep their jobs and sludge forward through the daily piles of misery.  I could take it no longer.  I was unhappy with the way things were and my health was suffering.

I have it in my head that I control my destiny, not money.  I know, I know.  A ridiculous thought for sure.  Especially when I am in debt.  I mean, let’s just be real.  I. Am. In. Debt.  There you go.  But I have been reading a few books, and I have a plan.  Not only do I have a plan, but I believe it.  That is the biggest part to making your dreams succeed.  I decided I did NOT want to be a “starving” writer, quite literally.  I am putting some things on the back burner for now, and focusing on my goal.  Get out of debt.  Once I cross that off my list, the rest will follow.

If you are interested, you can find my new page, Vitalize You.  The thing is, I do not want you to click “LIKE”.  Nope.  Don’t do that.  Not until you have looked through all the albums and read about it.  Then if you are interested, click “like”.  You will not offend me if you are not interested.  This is, and always will be, about me.  But if I can help you along the way, let me know.  Message the page.

P.S.  This will be the only post about my new business…if I make a spin-off blog in the future, I’ll let you know:)

Acceptance…

Ever have one of those days?  Weeks, months, or perhaps even years?  Do you accept what is happening to you and just go through the motions day-to-day thinking you can’t change things?  Well, you’re right.  You can’t.  But you can change yourself.  Let me explain.  There are some people in this world that no matter what you say, it won’t matter.  It could be your boss, your co-worker, or your friend.  I bought a book a few years ago that had quotes about life.  I have always loved quotes and feel that they help direct my thoughts in a more positive way.  Once I started devoting myself to changing the way I felt each day, I started handling the stress of life better.  It did not happen overnight, and I still have bad days.  But I recognize the signs of stress in others and do what I can for them.  It might not seem like a big deal, but it has made a world of difference in my work relationships.  If you knew you had the power to change yourself, would you try?

Update to this post.  Over the weekend of June 2015, I completed 200 hours of Vinyasa yoga teacher training.  You can move from thinking into feeling when you put your mind to it.  I offer wellness coaching on my FB page Vitalize You.  If you just need a little push to help you reach your health and wellness goals…including weight loss, feel free to find me over there.
