3 Reasons a Fresh New Year is So Appealing.

Many people are stuck in a relationship they just don’t like, a job that sucks the life out of them, and debt that is dragging them down.  But this, my friends, this is the year that can change all that…or so you tell yourself.

The problem is unless you change some of your thoughts, patterns of behavior, and habits, it is just going to continue.  Many of us are looking for that blank slate.  Ahhh.  The clock strikes midnight and it is a brand new year.  What can we accomplish that is going to be different from last year?  What heights are we going to soar to if we have a fresh year before us?

Wherever we are in life’s journey, it is, quite frankly, up to you to decide what you are going to do with your fresh start.

3 Reasons a Fresh New Year is So Appealing:

  1. At any given point in our lives, we really do have the power to change.  We have to accept full responsibility though, and oftentimes, we want to blame other people.  But as the New Year starts, usually our resolutions are written in I statements.  This is the year I will…  It is in that moment, when we aren’t thinking about others and who to blame or lack of money, etc, that we really are grabbing the reigns of our future…and that my friends, is empowering.
  2. We get really clear on what we want.  This is the time we stop second guessing ourselves.  We say things like “I am going to lose 5 pounds.” and we know that we want to do this thing.  We don’t even think about how at the moment, we just get really clear on what we want to do.  This attitude is the one that helps us prepare for what we really want in our lives.  if we can stay in this state of mind by constantly re-aligning to this statement, we can actually make this happen.
  3. We believe anything can happen in this new year…and so it can.  This is the time our thoughts have turned inward.  This is powerful!!  We start thinking more about what our heart wants, and we get out of our heads long enough to believe it can happen.  As we turn inward and listen more intently to intuition, we again affirm what we already knew.  We’ve got this.  We just need a little re-direction every now and again from our heart strings…as they are pulling us in the right direction.

Last year, I got really crystal clear on what I wanted my life to look like.  As I started my journal therapy, my life began to change in ways that were astonishing.  I would look back over the new month where I had my goals that I really wanted to accomplish that month and there were so many checks by the end of the month.  Sometimes the check marks appeared a few months down the road, but still, I was able to check things off at a much higher rate than I ever had before.

I was able to pay off a huge amount of debt, buy a new vehicle, renew my passport, go on vacation, and do many of the things I had set as long-term goals.  But just by writing them on my future goals sheet in my journal, they were there and I was held accountable to my dreams.  It was actually quite powerful.  Of course, not everything has happened yet, but I am moving those dreams over into my new journal for next year.

Procrastination and the dreaded “resolutions”…3 tips to overcome it!

I know that at the end of each year, millions of people resolve to do better next year.   The problem is, resolve means steadfastness, and we let many things get in the way of that resolve.  Procrastination has become our safety net, trust me I know.

But what if we traded in that safety net, for true results?  What would happen?

We’d actually get things done.  We’d stop listening to fear and self-doubt.  We’d have to be accountable.  Ack.  Those things by themselves are scary.  Scary feet. Scary feet. Scary feet.  <<< Sully would approve of you being scared.

Unfortunately, if you are reading this, we have hit the grown up stage and the responsibilities that come with that are often too much for us in our heads, so we fall back on fear.  I understand.  I have been there many times.  So what changed for me?

3 tips to overcome procrastination:

  1. Create clearly defined goals…and then look to see if you can break them down even further.  In my new online community, I was talking about how to really get clear on what you want and then step back and see if it can be even more clear.  After we have created these crystal clear steps to your end result, make sure you know how realistic they are.  For example, one goal might be making more money.  Okay, so how much?  If you are on the path to millions, is that realistic right this very minute?  Maybe you can have a goal to make $100 more this pay period.  At the end of the year, you can have your big goal of making x amount of dollars.  Try not to write out that your goal is to get to the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
  2. Minimize the path to distractions…engage in community support.  As I was on the path to wellness, the community around me was not very supportive.  I had to change my focus as many of you have heard me say time and time again.  It actually became my most popular quote and my tag line, but I truly believe “Surround yourself with what you want to become.” << Okay, my original quote was a bit longer, but of course, I will put it at the end for you.  But let’s think about your distractions.  Write them out if you have to.  Map out your pitfalls like you are Indiana Freaking Jones and this is the Temple of Doom.  Write out snakes, those might be the people trying to bring you down.  “Why’d it have to be snakes?”  And then the booby traps, that might be the triple chocolate cake your friend ordered right in front of you.  The nerve.  Then what is going to save you from the pit?  Who or what is your rope vine that comes right as you need it?  Support.  Find that group of people who will be there for you.
  3. Get to a safe environment…whew.  After you have made it out of distraction zone, what are you going to do next?  Sticky notes.  I didn’t invent them though, but I use them.  So here are a few ways to help yourself with notes.  Get your planner ready and write in what you need to do.  Clean your desk area into one that is organized and less “Pig Pen” like.  Physically remove old to-do lists.  Streamline your tasks into today and by the end of today.  Don’t look at the overall month right now…that can be your future log.  Make certain you are holding yourself accountable or use the S.O.S. option if you are in my closed group. <<< that’s where you get to ask me for help on 1 specific thing before Thursday of each week.  It might show up as a blog post.  You never know:)

New things…

As this year comes to a close, I reflect on the “new” and would personally like to burn the “old”.  Oh not old friendships or anything like that, but I chose not to dwell in the past as it’s over and we have to take this minute by the hand and hold on for dear life before something tragic happens and the moment is gone.  There have been some horrible things happening in and around my friend’s lives this year and I let it get to me at times.  I have said this before, but when something happens, I actually place myself in that person’s shoes for a minute.  I zone out, and become them for a second.  I imagine what it must feel like to get the news they just heard, or to go through whatever they are going through.  I have tried to stop this process…much like that new movie that is coming out based on an old short story called The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

So far, I have not been very successful.  There was cancer news, deaths of family members and friends, deaths of pets, depression, divorce, loss of homes, illnesses that tear you a part from the inside out, injuries, debt, and the suicide of a high school friend.  I am sure I am forgetting some bad news, but that is why I say I would like to burn the old.  I have held on to my hope as best I could for this year, but another sad thing happened to my brother’s friend on Christmas day.

What I am doing now is pushing through all of that and focusing on my new goals.  Making new friends with the same goals makes my work easier.  Realizing that I know what I want, on the cusp of what will be year 40, yes, that year, does not scare me (getting asked for my ID might help me be less scared, ha).  So I’m going to tell you what I said to my daughter the other day while pumping gas.  I said I want to be financially secure enough to hand out gift cards to people I don’t know, with no strings attached, so that they can buy whatever they need.  Groceries, presents, gas, or just pay doctor bills.  My work with people of poverty reminds me that we still have much to do for those who have fallen on hard times.  One day, I hope to be able to ease someone’s burden.  One day soon.

 

Author’s note:  It is now a few years later.  I gave out lots of different things to people this year in order to be of service to humanity.  I have also developed my own coaching programs to help others, and I am more financially secure than I have been in years.  My Head|Heart|Health Club is going to be taking a great journey this year to look at what we need to change, what we want to create and how we can create more abundance in our lives as well.  I would love to see you there!

Those crazy resolutions…

A resolution is defined as a resolve, determination or unconquerable will.  The sad thing is, we don’t really have iron will when we make some of these so-called resolutions.  This reminds me of a quote I saw. 

I am making a commitment to write more this year, exercise on a regular basis, and stress less.  I believe those things can be done.  What are you “committed” to?  Except no excuses from yourself; only results.
