Motivational Monday…

I can’t begin to process what it would have been like to have lived in a tumultuous time such as the era of the great Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  He won that at age 35 and turned over the prize money of $54,123 to further the civil rights movement.  I have mentioned throughout this blog how important it is for me to give back to the community I live in.  As a young white teacher working in a poverty-stricken area, I showed you but a glimpse of some of the lives of the children I worked with (see November posts).  As a mother, I couldn’t imagine the fear the women I counseled lived with.  When I met with them to discuss the needs of their children, I looked into their eyes and saw something I could never understand, but knew I had to try to help.

Sometimes we lose sight of what we are here on this earth to do.  Sometimes, it takes a strong person to stand up and fight for what is right.  I have met so many people who look the other way.  They have lost sight of their ability to make a difference in this world.  Always waiting for someone else to speak.  Someone else to make the first move.  Someone else to be the leader that they could have been.  It is a risk.  I know that.  But it is one that you have to make if you want to get anywhere in this world.  Do not sit back in the face of injustice.  Be the leader.

Controversy is a part of life.  Are we much further now than in the 60’s?  Some would say yes.  Some would have you believe we keep sliding backward.  Do not allow yourself to get pulled into the controversy as a mud slinger.  That is what makes us slide.  Be the one who stands up and makes a difference in a positive way.  Own your mistakes, but allow those mistakes to propel you forward.  Believe you can make a difference, and you will.
